How Much Water Should You Drink When Exercising?

We all know staying hydrated is important, but many people don't realise just how much it can affect their performance, recovery and overall health.

Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling tired, reduce your strength and endurance, make workouts feel harder than they should, and slow down your recovery afterwards.

Whether you're training in the gym, running outdoors or simply trying to stay active during the warmer months, drinking enough water is one of the easiest ways to improve your performance.

Why Hydration Matters

Water helps your body:

💧 Regulate body temperature

💪 Deliver nutrients to your muscles

❤️ Support heart function and circulation

⚡ Improve energy levels and concentration

🦵 Reduce muscle cramps and fatigue

🔄 Aid recovery after exercise

When you're dehydrated, your body has to work much harder to perform the same workout.

How Much Should You Drink?

While everyone's needs are different, a good guide is:

  • 2–3 litres of water each day for most adults.

  • Drink 500ml 2–3 hours before training.

  • Sip water throughout your workout.

  • Replace fluids afterwards, especially if you've been sweating heavily.

If you're exercising for more than an hour or in very hot weather, you may also benefit from drinks containing electrolytes to replace sodium and other minerals lost through sweat.

Signs You Might Be Dehydrated

Keep an eye out for:

  • Feeling thirsty

  • Headaches

  • Dry mouth

  • Dark yellow urine

  • Feeling dizzy or light-headed

  • Muscle cramps

  • Reduced performance during exercise

If you notice these signs, it's time to drink more fluids.

Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated

✅ Carry a reusable water bottle.

✅ Drink regularly throughout the day rather than all at once.

✅ Increase your intake during hot weather.

✅ Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber and oranges.

✅ Don't wait until you're thirsty—by then you're already becoming dehydrated.

Remember...

Good hydration isn't just important during your workout—it's something to focus on every day.

Looking after the basics like drinking enough water, sleeping well and eating a balanced diet will help you get far more from every training session.

Train for Health. Stay Hydrated. Perform Your Best. 💙
